28 Sep - 6 Oct 2014 - Kazakhstan - A wild apple tree grows on the Kok Zhailau, or Green Meadow, high in the Tian Shan Mountains. Kok Zhailau, or Green Meadow, in the Ilye Alatau National Park, is slated for development as a ski resort with some 63 kilometers of trails. Around 10,000 people in Almaty have signed a petition against the government's plan. Genetic diversity is threatened in the US by industrial agriculture - but genes are still strong in Kazakhstan, the ancestral heartland of the wild apple.
